The Congo Revival project formed in 2013 is the development arm of the Bumuntu Peace Institute established in 2010 to promote peace, dialogue, and education in Central Africa. The goal of the Congo Revival project is to build a sustainable University Complex in the cities of Kamina and Lubumbashi within the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
After years of internal war in the D.R. Congo, the disastrous economic condition and lack of critical physical infrastructure in that region have had a detrimental effect on the communities and their livelihoods that has compromised the equilibrium of peace in the region. North Katanga is among the poorest provinces of the D.R. Congo fiscally and educationally. Education is critical, not only for the future leaders of this country but also for world peace, given that the Congo is often a battleground for many world powers in search for the abundant natural resources found in this country. Moreover, both world peace and world economic development education require a democratic culture and quality education in this part of Africa in order to produce a qualified work force that is equipped to confront the challenges of the 21st Century global market and to meet the requirement of responsible global citizenship that transcends the kind of ethnic and ideological sectarianism that breeds wars and terrorism, and hinders social progress. This can be achieved through private universities built by global outreach organizations such as the Congo Revival, which are not controlled by government bureaucracies; hence, the importance of our project. We intend to build a university that will foster a non-conventional type of education, taking into account the imperatives of our global and digital age, with its emphasis on empowering women, human rights, democracy, global interdependence, ethnic co-existence, intercultural dialogue, religious tolerance, environmental protection and sustainability.
The Congo Revival project already has significant traction and ground support through endorsements from elected officials, Senators and Members of Parliament as well as local Tribal Chiefs, Religious Leaders, and the Civil Society from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This sustainable and self-replicating ambitious goal not only serves the people in this area through its infrastructure but also encompasses a holistic approach to changing a traditional mindset. The Congo Revival is fostering a holistic shift by reaching out to all stakeholders, men, woman, girls, and boys, so that change is welcomed and anticipated.
